Meet Alex Farrugia, the Brain Behind One of Malta’s Most Innovative Business Apps
Updated: Oct 14
Time is money. But how much valuable time do businesses lose simply keeping track of it?

For accountants, lawyers, architects, consultants and other professionals, managing billable hours, projects and invoices is an essential part of business, yet often a time-consuming one.
Enter Hidma, a Maltese-developed software platform created to make these everyday tasks simpler, faster and more efficient. Built around the needs of professional services firms, Hidma combines time tracking, project management and billing in one intuitive digital solution.
We catch up with Alex Farrugia, Hidma's founder, to discuss the thinking behind the platform, its growing appeal among professionals, ambitions for the future and the creative collaboration with Ray de Bono and his team at Dmax behind Hidma's refreshed brand identity and new website.
Q 1. Alex, tell us about Hidma. What inspired you to develop the platform?
A. Hidma was born out of a very practical need. Working in professional services, I realised that many existing time-tracking and billing systems were unnecessarily complicated and time-consuming.
We wanted to develop something different: an intuitive, efficient platform that makes recording time, managing projects and billing clients as straightforward as possible.
Q 2. Who are your typical clients, and how does Hidma make their working lives easier?
A. Our clients are primarily professional services firms, including accountants, auditors, lawyers, architects and business advisers. Essentially, businesses where time represents a significant part of their revenue.
Hidma helps them track billable hours, manage projects, issue invoices and monitor profitability, all from one platform. It's about reducing administration and giving professionals more time to focus on their clients.

Q 3. What distinguishes Hidma from other time management and billing applications?
A. Simplicity and usability are at the heart of everything we do. We have invested considerable effort in creating a platform that is intuitive without compromising on functionality.
Hidma also provides valuable insights into business performance, including profitability and billing efficiency. Importantly, we listen closely to our clients and continuously develop the platform around their needs.

Q 4. Hidma has recently undergone a branding and website refresh. What prompted this investment, and how would you describe your experience working with Ray de Bono and his team?
A. As Hidma continues to grow, we felt it was important for our brand and digital presence to reflect the quality of our software and our ambitions for the future.
Working with Ray de Bono and his team was a very productive experience.
It certainly helped that Ray and his associates have a strong understanding of IT and the software industry. They spoke our language, understood what we were trying to achieve and translated our vision into a refreshed brand identity and a new website that better reflects who we are and where we want to take Hidma.
Q 5. Finally, what lies ahead for Hidma, and how can interested businesses get started?
A. We're continuously developing Hidma, introducing new features and expanding its integration capabilities with other business applications.
Our ambition is to make Hidma an indispensable tool for professional services firms.
